Holding back your opinion is hurting your business

I often get asked by the health coaches I speak to, “Can I really make this work? Do you think I can have a profitable business?”

Getting a business off the ground is a lot of work, so it’s a valid question!

Over the last few months I’ve been giving a lot of thought to what makes certain coaches successful, and what causes other coaches to struggle with creating a thriving business.

Of course there are things like…

  • being an action taker
  • having a beautiful and effective website
  • learning how to build a list (and doing it)
  • having strong speaking skills
  • being a natural at networking
  • being a good writer

These things certainly all help, but there’s something else. A single ingredient.

As I’ve thought about all the clients I’ve worked with over the last three years, I’ve found one commonality among the coaches that have been successful.

They all had a message they were desperate to share.

They had something (or things) that they felt so strongly about, that they simply had no choice but to share it.

What I have witnessed is that this drive to share their message and knowledge is what keeps these successful coaches taking action and building momentum in their businesses.

When you tap into your convictions, here’s what happens…

First, you get connected to why you’re doing this work.

You become clearer than ever that you can help people, which makes you feel more confident as a coach.

You are more motivated to take action, because you feel compelled to share what you know.

When you share your message, you are able to come from a place of leadership, authority, confidence, and authenticity.

This makes people drawn to you. The people you reach want to follow you.

Growing your business continues to be about sharing vital information, so you can help people. (This is when working doesn’t feel like work.  It feels like something you’d gladly do for free.)

When you tap into and share your convictions, you’ll find is that everything becomes easier.

Getting clients, getting referral partners, building your list, lining up speaking engagements all starts to fall into place.

Yes, you might need to learn some of the step-by-step how-tos, such as exactly how to…

build your list

run programs

or, give talks and teleseminars.

These are all things you can easily learn. And you’ll be able to run with them once you identify the message(s) you want to share.

What happens when you’re missing this ingredient?

When you don’t know what message you want to share, you may feel like you’re floundering.

You likely feel that you’re working really hard at your to-do list, but it’s difficult to build momentum.  And, you may find it difficult to stay motivated and continue taking action in your business.

How about you? What do you feel driven to share?

What information, philosophy, approach and/or specific strategies do you feel compelled to get into the hands of as many people as possible?

Make a list.

This list may contain broader ideas as well as very specific nitty gritty strategies.

Take some time away from your computer, with a paper and pen, and do a brain dump.  Don’t judge what you write down – let it flow.

I go through this process with all of my VIP clients and it’s incredibly powerful.  I liken it to an archaeological dig, because often the things you have convictions about are so engrained in you – they are so much a part of you – that you can’t easily articulate them. It’s like you take them for granted.

Feeling stuck and unsure of what message you want to share?

Think about your personal story. What has had a huge impact on your own health?

Think about your clients. What have you shared with them that has been a game changer?

Important Note: Your message will change and evolve over time.

It probably feels like a lot of pressure to nail down “The Message” you want to share with the world.

To take the pressure off, know that your message will change and evolve over time, because you will change and evolve over time.

As you learn more and have more experiences with your own health and working with your clients, you will have new insights that you want to share.  These new insights may even contradict with ideas you’re sharing today.

This is A-OK. It’s just part of being a life-long learner.
